Notes on A Prelude on the Babylonian Captivity of the Church
Born Tommaso de Vio, also known as Jacopo Vio, Cajetan was born in Gaeta, Italy in 1468.
He joined the Dominican order in 1484. He disputed Pico della Mirandola in Ferara in 1494.
He taught Theology and Philosophy at Padua. He was General of the Dominican Order from
1508-1518. He was ordained a Cardinal in 1517, then as Bishop of Gaeta in 1519.
He urged reform at the Fifth Lateran Council (1502-1517) He served as the Papal legate for
Germany in 1518-1519. He supported a crusade against the Turks, the election of Charles
the 5th and Hadrian the 6th, opposed the divorce of Henry the 8th and tried to mediate
between Luther and the Church. He also authored a commentary on Aquinas' Summa.
