The Reverend Larry. S. Harvala is Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Missions and Associate Dean of Pastoral ducation and Placement—Placement Director. He teaches primarily in the area of Pastoral Theology. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota in 1974 and the Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1980. In 2006, Rev. Harvala was honored by Concordia University, St. Paul, Minnesota, with the Doctor of Letters degree.

Rev. Harvala served the dual parish of Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lidgerwood, North Dakota, and Zion Lutheran Church, rural Claire City, South Dakota, from May of 1980 to December of 1988. He accepted a call to the dual parish of Grace Lutheran Church, Carrington, North Dakota, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sykeston, North Dakota, and served from January of 1989, adding the continuing vacancy congregation at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Rockford, North Dakota, and serving the three congregations until 2000. In June of 2000, he was elected President of the North Dakota District and served in that office until August 2008 when he accepted the position at Concordia Theological Seminary.

Rev. Harvala served the church as Circuit Counselor, LLL and LWML Counselor, Synodical Reconciler, and Vicarage Supervisor. He has been on the Board of Directors of Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota, including three years as Chairman of the Board, the Board of Directors of Shepherd’s Hill Retreat, and the Carrington North Dakota School Board. He served on the Missions, Human Care, and Elections Committees at synodical conventions.
