After discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1976, Dr. Rutt pursued a career as a flight instructor and commercial pilot before preparing for the ministry. He is a graduate of Bethany Lutheran College (A.A), Minnesota State University (B.S.), and Concordia Theological Seminary (M.Div. and Ph.D.). He has served as a missionary to Guatemala, Central America, where he was involved in church planting and theological education, and as a parish Pastor at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. James, MN and St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Truman, MN. He was also the Area Secretary for Latin America/Caribbean with LCMS World Mission. He was on the faculty of Concordia Theological Seminary for two years (1995-97) and then returned to CTS in June of 2000. He has written several articles on mission history and practice and is currently the editor of the Communicator, the regular newsletter of the Lutheran Society for Missiology. Dr. Rutt also serves as a consultant and liaison for LCMS World Mission to Latin America. He is called upon regularly to consult and speak on mission issues throughout the U.S. and Latin America. Currently he is the Chairman of the Board of Lutheran Bible Translators. Dr. Rutt’s wife, Deborah, is Associate Vice President for Advancement of LCMS Housing Support, and is the founding president of A&D Global Business Relations. He and Mrs. Rutt have five children, five grandsons. Dr. Rutt currently is serving as Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Missions and Dean for Distance Learning.
